Gökova (Akyaka)

Gökova Map

Gökova (Akyaka) is situated in the province of Mugla, in the southwest of Turkey, at the eastern end of the

Gökova gulf, between Marmaris, Mugla and Bodrum.. It’s delightful position at the end of the Gökova gulf, bordered in the north by the almost 1000m high Sakartepe, in the south by the wetlands of the Gökova plain ("heaven’s plain") with it’s multitude of species, particularly water birds, takes the visitor into it’s spell.

How to go

There are no buses from Airport of Dalaman to Akyaka. The bus starts from the town of Dalaman. To get to the town you can by taxi. It will take 10 minutes. In the town you go to Otogar( bus station) and find a bus from Dalaman to Mugla. In the bus just say to the driver Akyaka and he will stop at Akyaka road. It will take 1 hour. When you leave the bus you’ll need just to have a short walk down the road and soon the center of Akyaka will appear.

Car rental :

Renting a car from Dalaman airport is adviced, because Bodrum , Marmaris , Fethiye , Gökova (Akyaka) and too many places to see in this cities are close to Dalaman. Its a bit expensive (around 50-70 Euro per day) but faster. In the high season finding buses is diffucult in this location.

Accomodation :

You cant find 5 stars or 4 stars Hotels in Gökova. There is only 1 hotel called 3 stars. You can stay in anoter city like Marmaris (30 min. Far) , or at a pension in Gökova. Do not eat at the place where you stay ! Because on the road to Marmaris you will see wonderful and quite cheap places for dining and having breakfast. There are also good restaurants in Gökova. Especially the restaurants near the river (called Azmak ) are perfect.

A trip in heaven

In Gökova (Akyaka ) you will find deep Pine tree forest just near the Caribbean blue sea. Extremely fresh air will suprise you. While walking through coves you will see fresh water fishes and sea fishes are swimming in the same water because of fresh water springs in the sea. You will see water lilies in the sea. In protected areas you will walk with

Carettas (sea turtles).

Still most of Akyaka’s visitors being turkish, the number of european tourists is increasing. The main attraction for most of the visitors is incredible natural beauty of Akyaka, with a multitude of species in the wetlands, among those the nearly extincted European Fishotter(lutra lutra), during the wintermonths different types of herons, flamingos, even migrating pelicans can be observed with some luck. Since some years paragliding from the height of the Sakartepe, the "local mountain" of Akyaka, down to the plain became quite fashionable. The launch site is sufficient, but not easy for beginners..
